In the book “Krik? Krak!” by Edwidge Danticat there are many short stories that represent the struggle among Haitian people. Haitian families face many deaths in the massacre river. Those family members who lost someone prayed to the Madonna. Many of the family members who survived the massacre river are in a prison or dead. Haitian families faced many struggles.
El generalissimo, Dios Trujillo the honorable chief of state, had ordered the massacre of all Haitians living in the Spanish-speaking country. Massacre river separating the two countries. All the Haitians in the Spanish- speaking country tried to across the river to safety but many died in that river. Very little survived and those who did lost a love one in that river and returned to pray to their fellow relatives.
The Madonna symbolizes their religion. The Madonna is a little statue, the mother of Mary. Many women’s who lost their mothers prayed and had a Madonna. The Madonna would cry when you would put a thin layer of wax and oil in the hollow space of the Madonna’s eyes and when the wax melted, the oil would roll down the little face and made a perfect tear. The Madonna meant a lot to Haitian people.
The prison system in Haiti was awful. Many people who were in jail were accused of being a witch, saying that they could fly. Women’s were beaten up, get rations of food. All the women’s were shaved bald every week. Before the Haitian women would go to bed the guards made them throw tin cups of cold water at one another so that their bodies would not be able to grow those wings made of flames, fly away in the middle of the night, slip into the slumber of innocent children and steal their breath. They say this because many women’s were accused of killing children so they were witches.
